Kentucky Derby Mint Julep Recipe

The 139th Kentucky Derby will provide fans with plenty to savor and sip, serving southern innovations, traditional favorites and the world-famous Kentucky Derby Mint Julep. Chef Jo-Jo weaves his southern roots into the Derby menu, incorporating Kentucky flair, locally sourced ingredients and racetrack staples.

For those that can't make it to the race, Chef Jo-Jo shares his recipe for the legendary Kentucky Derby Mint Julep!

Kentucky Derby Mint Julep:

(Serves 6-8 people)

2 cups - sugar

2 cups - water

16 oz - Kentucky bourbon, 2 per mint julep

Crushed ice

10 sprigs fresh mint

8 mint julep glasses

Chef Jo-Jo's Notes: Combine water and sugar in a pot and bring to a boil to make simple syrup. Boil for 5 minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with 2 sprigs of fresh mint and refrigerate overnight. To make your mint julep, start by filling each mint julep glass with crushed ice. Add 1 tablespoon of the mint flavored simple syrup then 2 ounces of Kentucky bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the glass. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

The Duel In The Desert

The “Dodge Viper Celebrity Challenge,” which takes place at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, kicks off 11 straight weeks of 2011 Dodge Viper Cup series action on Versus.

Featuring a talented collection of drivers from across the spectrum of Dodge Motorsports' disciplines competing in identical Dodge Viper ACR-X spec cars, the event was held April 13, but is just now airing at 3:00PM EDT, Sunday, October 9, on Versus.

Leading the list of participating drivers is automotive legend and Penske Racing team owner Roger Penske, making a rare appearance behind the wheel. Penske hasn't driven competitively since the mid-1960s. Joining their team owner in the "Dodge Viper Celebrity Challenge" are Penske Racing and NASCAR superstars Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski and Sam Hornish Jr.

Filling out the racing field were event host Ralph Gilles, President and CEO - SRT and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC; Dodge Motorsports engineer Matt Bejnarowicz and Viper Cup series drivers Connie Bogan, Jeff Courtney, Jason Daskalos, Eric Galerne, Brad Gorrondona, Billy Gropp, Ted Hughes, Todd Nelson and Fred Roberts.

The airing of the "Dodge Viper Celebrity Challenge" will air through December 18 with all subsequent broadcasts beginning Sundays at 3 pm.
